Each November, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. celebrates its Founders’ Month, an annual reminder of the power, purpose, and progress that seven visionary educators sparked on November 12, 1922, at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. As the only sorority in the Divine Nine founded on a predominantly white campus, Sigma Gamma Rho emerged from a determination to uplift Black women during one of the nation’s most challenging eras. Today, the organization continues to stand as a beacon of resilience, leadership, and generational impact.
While the Divine Nine is home to several iconic organizations, Sigma Gamma Rho often stands in a quiet league of its own, consistently delivering profound, measurable change. With over 200,000+ members, global chapters, and initiatives that reach far beyond college campuses, the women of Sigma Gamma Rho have built a legacy that has impacted women worldwide.
A Legacy Rooted in Service, Strength, and Sisterhood
The seven founders; Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, and Cubena McClure—built Sigma Gamma Rho on the cornerstone philosophy of Greater Service, Greater Progress. For 103 years, that motto has guided a mission centered on education, social action, community empowerment, and uplifting Black women across every stage of life.
From pioneering youth programs like Rhoers, to nationwide efforts addressing maternal health, education equality, and violence prevention, Sigma Gamma Rho has consistently positioned itself as a solutions-driven force within Black communities.
Impact That Goes Beyond the Letters
What truly sets Sigma Gamma Rho apart is its commitment to work over noise. The organization’s legacy isn’t built on popularity—it’s built on outcomes.
Sigma Gamma Rho has maintained a strong presence in education, politics, entertainment, and entrepreneurship, with a roster of notable members including:
Fantasia Barrino
Wendy Raquel Robinson
Nicci Gilbert
LaTavia Roberson
Kelly Price
MC Lyte
These women, along with hundreds of thousands of other sorors, exemplify excellence, leadership, and the pride of wearing royal blue and gold.
A Sorority That Continues to Rise
As the Divine Nine continues to evolve, Sigma Gamma Rho stands out as a powerful reminder that greatness is not measured by volume but by value. Sigma Gamma Rho’s work consistently reaches farther, impacts deeper, and uplifts wider.
Whether through national initiatives, global partnerships, or their unwavering dedication to scholarship and service, the organization continues to set a standard that is impossible to ignore.
Honoring Founders’ Month with Purpose
Founders’ Month isn’t just a time of celebration, it’s a call to action. It is a reminder of the seven educators who dared to create something greater than themselves and the generations of women who now carry that vision forward.
For Media Girls On Tour—an organization rooted in elevating women, storytelling, and representation, it is an honor to spotlight a sisterhood that embodies excellence in its purest form.
As Sigma Gamma Rho marks another year of Greater Service, Greater Progress, we salute the women who continue to blaze trails, break barriers, and shape the world—quietly, powerfully, and unmistakably.
Because when it comes to true impact, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has always been the golden standard.
